Kota Kinabalu – A kidnapping group from the Southern Philippines was forced to abandon its mission here after failing to penetrate into Sabah waters recently.
Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscomn) Director General Datuk Mohammad Mentek said the intelligence report disclosed that the group tried to make its way into the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone) through Semporna waters, but failed.
The group, however, did not go home empty handed as it was believed to have hit a resort closer to home — between the Cagayan and Palawan waters, off the Philippines, and kidnapped two foreign tourists from there.
Following the latest attempt by kidnappers to enter Sabah waters, Mohammad said he had instructed security forces in the Esszone area, covering 10 districts from Kudat to Tawau, to be ready at all times.
“We do not want a repeat of the Singamata Reef Resort’s kidnapping case.
“We view the matter very seriously.”
He revealed the Philippine security forces were getting closer to the location where China tourist Gao Hua Yuan and Filipina, Marcy Dayawan, were being kept hostage.
“They are both well and safe and based on intelligence feedback, the China woman is allowed to make phone calls to her family almost daily.
“Our security counterparts in the Philippines are doing their level best to rescue the two women, without hurting them.”
Gao, 29, from Shanghai and resort staff Marcy, 40, were kidnapped from Singamata Reef Resort by seven armed men at around 10.30pm on April 2.
“We have sent a team from Esscom to southern Philippines to find the best way to rescue and free the two women.”
