PAS has not ruled out the possibility that it will field its own candidate for the Pengkalan Kubor by-election, despite the seat being traditionally contested by its ally, PKR.
"Usually, the party that contests (the seat) in the general election will contest the by-election. But this is not necessarily binding," PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali told a press conference.
"There may be a new decision based on the 'winnablity' factor. We can still discuss this."
The Election Commission (EC) will meet on Friday to discuss the Pengkalan Kubor seat, which became vacant after the death of Umno state assemblyman Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar on August 20.
The by-election will put to test Pakatan Rakyat's renewed commitment to remain together, after having weathered the Selangor menteri besar storm that almost split the pact apart.
But Mustafa said today any decision made would have to be based on consensus and the priority should be on winning the seat.
"Whatever the case, PKR and PAS must discuss this and reach a consensus so we can win."
PKR's candidate for the Pengkalan Kubor seat in last year's general election claimed they lost due to sabotage from within PR.
Although he did not mention any names, Saharun Ibrahim used a "durian" analogy in what is believed to be a reference to PAS, as Pengkalan Kubor is one of three seats in the Tumpat parliamentary constituency, a PAS stronghold.
PAS and PKR's performance in the seat in the last four general elections has been on the decline since the 1999 general election.
PAS's Wan Husain Wan Ahmad won by 2,432 votes in the 1999 election, but the seat was lost by 714 votes in 2004.
PKR's Hasan Ibrahim performed better in the 2008 general election, losing by only 100 votes to the Barisan Nasional candidate.
But the party did worse in last year's polls when Saharun lost to Zahidi by 1,736 votes, while independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary received only 65 votes.
PKR has started discussions with PAS on preparations for the Pengkalan Kubor by-election.
PKR deputy president Azmin Ali said he had met with the Islamist party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang on Thursday and agreed that an in-depth discussion would be convened to prepare for the by-election after the PKR congress.
He had also contacted the Kelantan PKR chief to find out about the party's performance in the Kelantan seat in the last two general elections.
