Ukraine's government confirmed that a Malaysia Airlines passenger airline crashed in the east of the country, close to Russian border. President Poroshenko has announced the government is launching an investigation into the incident. A presidential statement is expected to be released shortly.
Malaysia Airlines also tweeted that they lost contact with the plane: "Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow."
Advisor to Ukraine's Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko, 280 passengers and 15 crew members have been killed.
The plane was carrying 295 people on board, according to Interfax news agency, including 280 passengers.
The flight departed at 12:14 from Amsterdam en route to Kuala Lumpur, and shot down around 16:20.
The Interfax report said the plane came down 50 km (20 miles) short of entering Russian airspace. It "began to drop, afterwards it was found burning on the ground on Ukrainian territory," the unnamed source said.
Interfax news agency said, quoting an unnamed source, that the plane disappeared from radar at a height of 10,000 metres after which it came down near the town of Shakhtyorsk.
The plane crashed in the war zone where Ukraine's government forces and Russia-backed separatists where two Ukrainian military planes had been shot down in the past week. Ukraine's government blamed Russia for it.-interfax
