A "Justice for Saiful" t-shirt being torched by protestors
PUTRAJAYA: A scuffle broke out when a small group of people burned two t-shirts with pictures of Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan in front of a police barricade outside the Palace of Justice here.
The group was then reprimanded by other supporters, including PKR youth members, resulting in lots of shoving and shouting.
The situation was quickly resolved, with police not needing to get involved.
PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the incident was isolated and the situation was under control.
“We urge everyone to refrain from getting too carried away with their emotions and remain calm,” he said.
One of the men who burned the t-shirts, who identified himself as Michael Tamil, said that he did it to show his support for Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“How else can we show our support if they won’t let us into our own court?” he asked.
Protesters clash outside the Palace of Justice
Anwar is appealing to set aside a five-year jail sentence for sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful.
A five-member panel led by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria will hear submissions from Anwar’s defence team of 14 lawyers led by former Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram.
On Jan 9, 2012, the High Court acquitted and discharged Anwar of sodomising Mohd Saiful, 27, on grounds that the court could not be 100% certain on the integrity of samples taken for DNA testing from the alleged victim.
The court had ruled that the samples could have been compromised before they reached the chemistry department for analysis.
However, on Mar 7 this year, the Court of Appeal overturned the High Court’s judgment and found Anwar guilty of sodomising Mohd Saiful. The Court of Appeal held that the trial judge had erred in his findings about the samples, which were based on the evidence of two expert witnesses called by the defence.
